Christmas is one of the busiest times of the yr for burglars. As a Fareham Locksmiths I am often required to, at some stage in the festive period, to come and exchange the locks or to make secure a property or residence of people who have been broken into. There is never a correct time to be burgled but when it happens during the Christmas holidays it can be in even more distressing and costly for all concerned. As per the guide released by Confused.com, the 10 most commonly stolen items (see below) are all matters that are regularly offered around Christmas time.
- Mobile phones
- Tools, especially power tools
- Laptops and PCs
- Golfing Equipment
- Gardening equipment
- Audio equipment
Don't be the victim this Christmas, here are a few of my recommendations to keep your home tightly closed (like a little mouses ear) this Christmas:
Most burglars enter residences and properties through poorly secured floor ground doors or windows, so do make certain your locks are up to the job!!
It is tempting to display your superbly wrapped festive offerings underneath the tree, ready for Christmas but this is simply one to keep away from if you are on the floor ground and your tree can be viewed from the street. Prevent an opportunist burglar from ruining Christmas by way of keeping gift/presents out of sight and away from a window
Invest in some proper exterior lighting fixtures and maintain hedges and keep larger vegetation trimmed back. This will make it extra tough for potential intruders to strive to get entry to your property without being seen
Make sure that all your home windows and doorways are kept locked at all instances and ensure that any ground flooring windows have key operated locks. In addition never depart keys in the backs of doors and always save keys out of sight – some cheeky burglars have made use of makeshift fishing rods positioned through the letterbox to successfully fish for household or car keys.
Never put a spare key beneath a plant pot or pebble at the the front of your house. If you or one of your household are in the habit of losing or forgetting keys then both go away an emergency spare key with a trusted neighbour or invest in a key safe
Resist the urge to share facts about high-priced items you have bought or plans you have for Christmas on social media. Some insurance businesses can also refuse to pay out following a break-in if they can prove a property owner was not cautious sufficient and advertised their new possessions or upcoming journeys online
Burglars love an empty property, so if you are away over the Christmas period ask a depended on neighbour to hold an eye on your domestics e.g. collect the mail and clear any snow from the course etc. It is also really worth investing in some timers so that you can set lights and TV/radio to swap on and off at different times for the duration of the day.
Join or begin a neighbourhood watch scheme. Evidence suggests that they can minimise crime via growing the common surveillance in an area.
